Carl Ferenbach: Corporate Environmentalist
Carl Ferenbach is the managing director of Berkshire Partners LLC.
Carl Ferenbach is also an environmentalist. He is Chairman Elect of the Environmental Defense Fund. Before becoming Chairman Elect, Carl Ferenbach was a member of the Board of Trustees. The Environmental Defense Fund is an organization committed to employ the laws of science and economics to create cost-efficient solutions to environmental problems and other environment-related concerns. The organization is also poised to protect the environmental rights of the people, such as access to clean water and air. The organization was largely responsible for Hawaii becoming a marine reserve in 2006. In 2007, the Environmental Defense Fund scored two victories in the Supreme Court, one involving the Clean Air Act of 1990, which, as a result of the suit, the EPA must now strictly implement, and the TXU buyout, which blocks the constructions of coal plants in Texas.
Aside from his involvement with the Environmental Defense Fund and Berkshire Partners, Carl Ferenbach is also a co-founder of the High Meadows Foundation, where he serves as a trustee along with his wife, Judy. The foundation is heavily geared towards the protection and preservation of the environment. Some of the foundation's programs are:
- High Meadows Fellows Program - In this program, new graduates from Princeton University are placed in two-year fellowship with the Environmental Defense, The Food Project, and the Vermont College Foundation. The program is directed by the Pace Center in Princeton University.
- Support for Environmental Health - Shared by the Environmental Defense, this program focuses on improving health conditions of all affected species.
- Grand Challenges - This program requires participants to conduct research in basic sciences and create policies and solutions to three prominent environmental problems: energy resource crises, water and society in the sub-Saharan region, and infectious diseases that can reach global proportions. Scholars from Princeton Environmental Institute, Woodrow Wilson School, and the Engineering School gather to investigate these problems and discover applicable solutions.
- STEP Program - High Meadows Foundation promotes the total employment of Science and Technology in the creation of policies that would address issues about climate change. The STEP Program requires participants to devote much of their time to research and data analyses to create such policies.
Aside from Carl Ferenbach's association with Berkshire Partners and environmental activities, Carl Ferenbach also holds a high-ranking position at Princeton University. He was named a member of the University's Board of Directors in 2006. The university manages the Princeton Environmental Institute (PEI), which coordinates the school's environmental education, research and outreach programs.
