Defining Green Companies

Hot issues like global warming, biodiversity and pollution have gained increasing attention from consumers, media, government leaders and businesses.

It is a fact that companies consume a lot of resources and dump tons of waste, which is disastrous to the environment and human health. Due to the increased awareness for corporate responsibility toward the earth, more and more companies have finally begun to adopt environmental corporate policies. This has lead to the advent of "green companies," or business establishments that operate with minimal damage to the environment. Green companies employ environmentally sound practices like the use of recycled materials, assessment of waste production, and the use of eco-friendly materials in their manufacturing and retail process. Green companies also sponsor events and campaigns that promote environmentalism and build "green" buildings and offices using recycled and energy-efficient materials.

For example, gas and oil companies that mine and sell petroleum and energy source products have taken steps to ensure the protection of the environment by implementing policies to ensure the proper assessment and disposal of chemicals and other hazardous materials in their plants and their subsidiaries. These companies also employ modern recycling practices and train their employees in energy saving techniques to lessen fossil fuel consumption.

Companies in the food and hospitality industries might implement a simple environmental solution, such as switching to natural, ecologically-friendly paper cups. These cups can be made with less energy in the manufacturing process, thereby emitting fewer greenhouses gases. Moreover, these cups are completely renewable and compostable (instead of being delivered to landfills). Food and hospitality chains can take measures to evaluate their waste disposal and implement stringent recycling requirements.

The hospitality industry might also switch to natural soaps and biodegradable packaging. For example, Hilton Hotel's liquid formulas are made from 98.5% naturally derived ingredients, while their soap formulas are 99% natural. The packaging of their soap boxes and shower caps is 100% biodegradable. The carton-printing even uses biodegradable, soy-based ink.

These are just a few examples of what some companies in niche industries can do to be move to a more environmental business These "green" companies set the example for the rest of corporate America.
