Famous personalities have made their choice in staying at Hilton Hotel, including John Lennon and Yoko Ono, who stayed at a Hilton Hotel branch in Amsterdam. With its company slogan "be hospitable," the Hilton Hotels Corporation continues to do good business and serve visiting guests. Hilton Hotels was recently cashed and bought by the Blackstone Group LP in a billion dollar deal. Hilton has made its environmental mark in the year 2007 by building green. Hilton has installed eco-friendly air-conditioning, solar heating, and waste water recycling systems in its hotels. One of Hilton's premier branches, the Hilton Vancouver Washington, was the first to implement environment-friendly practices and was awarded by the United States Green Building Council LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. The branch implements recycling programs, 100% fluorescent lighting, water efficient landscaping, storm water management, and uses the Columbian river as a means of ventilation. The hotel also has alternative fuel and refueling stations, and 6 plugs to support electricity-run cars. The branch is currently applying for Green Seal Certification.
Many branches have reduced their energy consumption and sourced their power supply using renewable energy. On a global level, Hilton International has incorporated environmental guidelines for the purchasing of raw materials. Hilton International also tries to conserve water by installing water saving fixtures in its new and refurbished hotel rooms. In the European region, water consumption has been continually reduced by over 15% since the beginning of 2002. Hilton International in Japan is the first hotel branch to attain the certification for all of its hotels in a single country. Hilton Tokyo Bay was certified in 1998. Hiltons Tokyo, Osaka, Otaru and Nagoya, are also members of the group of environmentally-friendly hotels.
