One of the major environmental problems that computer and electronic companies contribute to is electronic waste, or e-waste, with billions of tons of the harmful waste being produced each year. Computer monitors and circuit boards contain potentially toxic chemicals that if dumped into landfills, can seep into the soil and groundwater.
Lenovo Group Limited has made several earth-friendly efforts, including the recycling and disposal of used IBM/Lenovo product batteries. Lenovo participates in the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation's (RBRC) "Call2Recycle" program. RBRC has more than 30,000 drop off locations in the U.S. and Canada, where rechargeable batteries from Lenovo products such as lithium ion batteries in laptops can be recycled, free of charge. Improper disposal of batteries can have toxic effects to the environment. Lenovo has addressed this problem by joining computer recycling efforts in many parts of the world.
The "Call2Recycle" program does not only involve batteries but also computer hardware and other electronic devices such as cell phones.
In Canada, Lenovo partnered with Electronics Product Stewardship Canada (EPSC) to help reduce the amount of dangerous waste created by outdated computer hardware. The company offered rebates to those who participated.
In mainland China, the company has created a free recycling service for products made by the company. Lenovo's recycling service is available to users of Lenovo laptop computers, desktop computers and servers, in addition to ThinkPad laptops and ThinkCenter desktop computers. Business clients and individuals can send these computers to Lenovo's recycling sites across China. They can also request Lenovo staff to pick up the devices from their homes or offices. Lenovo has a third party partner to process and properly dispose of these collected computers, according to Chinese regulations and environmental laws. The company commits to cover all relevant cost involved during this process.
Because of these efforts in environment preservation, Lenovo Group Limited has been named by Greenpeace as the world's most environmentally friendly electronics firm. The environmental organization rates electronics firms on a quarterly basis, starting 2005.
Not only does Lenovo excel in being green through recycling endeavors, they also strive to be eco-friendly in the development of new computers. The company thrives to develop desktops which can be environment friendly, with low energy consumption, and limited use of harmful substances. and the process of creating the desktop unit will be eco friendly as well.
Building on the IBM legacy, Lenovo has recently created what is possibly one of the most eco-friendly, energy-efficient desktop platforms ever. The A 61e ThinkCentre is quiet, cool, not to mention small and thin in size. On top of this, it consumes less than half the electricity required by a small form factor PC. It was able to achieve this by partnering with chip maker AMD, whose dual core processors need just 45 watts to run — less than what an average incandescent light bulb needs. AMD chips also produce less heat.
The model has been awarded the highest ‘Gold' status from the industry's Green Electronics Council. The rating is based on the model's energy efficiency as well as its 90% post-industrial recyclable plastics and packaging.
Energy efficient computing allows businesses to not only help save the environment, but cut operational costs as well.
